How To Chop Onions Without Crying!
Ever wondered why you always cry while chopping an onion? Here is why you cry and how you can chop onions without crying During the chopping process, onions release a lachrymal factor that irritates the lachrymal glands of the eyes which cause tearing. The root end of the onion has the highest concentration of sulphuric compound that irritates the eyes causing them to tear.
The ultimate prevention of tearing of the eyes is through getting solutions and I got a number of them for you. Since the root has got the highest concentration of sulphuric acid it’s advisable to carefully cut it off or you completely avoid cutting it and leave it intact.
You can also peel off the skin of the onion and then put it a freezer or deep in cold water for 5 to 7 minutes. The cold effect slows the conversion of sulfoxides into gases that irritate your eyes.
Chew gum or eat a piece of bread while slicing the onion. While chewing you will diffuse the odors that cause tearing and you will breath through your mouth. In cases where there is no chewing gum or bread, you can simply breath through your mouth and stick your tongue out. This will prevent chemicals from getting to your nasal cavity so this won’t irritate the glands.
Sprinkle some salt on the onion before you start slicing. The salt will dissolve the Sulphur in the vapor as you chop so it won’t get to your eyes. You can as well put vinegar on the chopping board. Vinegar denatures the enzymes that may irritate the eyes.
You can also wear goggles. Goggles will effectively work by simply preventing the sulphuric gases from reaching your eyes.
Now you can comfortably slice your onions by following one of the methods above. Happy chopping of onions friend.
