Why is it hard to quit sugary processed foods?
Why is it hard to quit sugary processed foods? You definitely have asked yourself this question subconscious. Every mouthful of your sweetened drink, bakery food and refined carbs pushes you one step down on an already declining life expectancy fuelled by cognitive health hazards like Alzheimer’s, dementia and lifestyle diseases as diabetes, cardiovascular, reproductive and metabolic disorders. You’ve heard of this before but that hasn’t done much to help anyone quit.
But why is it difficult to stop these cravings? That’s because they’re not cravings but it’s an ADDICTION ,and so awareness of the health risks alone generates more fear, self-hate and hopelessness that make it hard for one to stop.
People become hooked on sugar from a very early age. Like smoking ,SUGAR used to be seen as HARMLESS! Now we are starting to see the evidence that SUGAR is equally dangerous. People who habitually consume refined carbs like bread ,cake , chocolate and other junk foods products become crabby, foggy, and tired after just a couple of hours of not having a another bite of their favourite snack, often desperately searching for any crumb to relieve the cravings.
Just two slices of wheat bread increases blood glucose to high levels, triggering insulin and growth of fat, particularly abdominal or deep visceral fat. There’s even more to wheat’s curious glucose behavior. The induced surge in glucose and insulin following wheat consumption is a 120-minute-long phenomenon that produces the spike of the glucose peak, followed by the inevitable rapid glucose drop. The surge and drop creates a two-hour roller coaster ride of fullness and hunger that repeats itself throughout the day causing you to overeat.
If it’s a treat i.e. good for you, why do you put a limit on it? Isn’t it because you INSTINCTIVELY know it’s doing you harm? Someone would say,
“ well I wouldn’t say I’m addicted , I can always stop whenever I want to using willpower”
Willpower is actually “ I WANT but I CAN’T ”! You feel that you are depriving yourself of something desirable and that battle is exhausting. And let’s face it, the CRAVINGS usually win ,don’t they? That’s ADDICTION!
Let’s take a quick look at how addiction works , there are two kinds of cravings ,the LITTLE CRAVING and the BIG CRAVING.
The LITTLE CRAVING was created by your first taste of SUGAR (and all the refined junk foods). That taste, and all the tastes of SUGAR that you have had since, causes you to MISS it when you haven’t had it for a while.
Next we have the BIG CRAVING , it’s BIG because it’s fed by a number of sources , advertising, our social circles, and even our even our families. This is the BRAINWASHING that tells you that having sugary foods is some sort of treat, a boost, or reward that you can’t live without. And, indeed, you do get a temporary BOOST. The little craving fades away and you feel better when it does.
“ people struggle to give up addictions , it’s hard”
well it’s only hard if you think going without sugar is hard. But when you realize that sugar is doing nothing for you, it becomes very easy. The only sacrifice you’re making is the one you’re already making now – through poor health, disease, and shortened life expectancy!
Overeating is a result of incorrect eating. By eating the wrong TYPES of foods, we tend to feel HUNGRIER. This is because the wrong foods do not contain the necessary nutrients to satisfy hunger. As a result, we eat more and the fat piles on! The main culprit, of course, is sugar. It’s not just refined sugar, but processed starchy carbs such as fries, pasta, and bread that are classed as BAD SUGAR! ALL WHEAT products are also highly processed and thus classed as BAD SUGAR.
Though cutting out processed foods that contain bad sugar, additives, or starchy carbs may seem daunting at first, when you begin to explore healthy options, you’ll see how much varieties there are, probably more than in your current diet!
A few things to get straight , you instinctively know that what you’re eating is not good for you? And until now you haven’t known how to change ,but you’re now willing to take charge alter your mindset and change a situation you’re unhappy with. All you have to do is understand that you’re not sacrificing anything by giving up sugary junks, but setting yourself free from an addiction prison.
